Open Message to osx86 Community & others

Well, before packaging this all I would like to share some thoughts after sharing them with people who had (or still has, and have all the right to to have, terrible the world would be if everyone had to think in the same way) disagreement with my work on the bioses.
This includes award, gigabyte, apple, but – fortunately – also PHYSICAL persons inside the OSX86.
All that I am doing is “to dry ice” (thats a brazilian expression, i don’t know if it exists outside here)
All this work will be forgotten as these boards get (and are already getting) obsolete.
As so i think about the meaning on this every day, as its a very big work to fly away with the time, and i always argue with myself what i could do to change what i do disagree by study and hearth on this world. In order to do that, I tried to expose before the world and the past of the world that surrounds me, now I will try to expose my feelings on the more tangible part of this world around me. I no longer think it is a geographically regional thought, but a more broad one.
So, going against all my own privacy rules, I will expose myself a little here, as I have been in the last days trying to make a (late) conversation with most people in OSX86 with no much luck in majority.

About Me

I am a Hardware Technician, studied 3 years for that here, but this is not considered a Bachelor degree. Before that, I was educated in a very closed and rich school here, the best in Rio, ruled by a Catholic Order who has as objective keeping the aristocracy of this country catholic and linked to their business.

They have buildings with gold plated walls, and shows that – in a country with so big poverty and richness differences – with proud instead of shame.

This place gave me the opportunity of having culture, contacts with the sons and grandsons of the men that really rule this country, 5 years of Alliance Française, Classic Culture classes, music, swimming, all a good education could give, but gave me together the notion of how things are masked and manipulated not only in my country but in our world.

I was ideologist enough at 14 years old to leave this place, to prefer a free cultural life then a rich bank account, to have friends who had nothing to owe to the aristocracy, word that in this country is still strong, unfortunately.

Leaving this place had the goodie of a free teenager life, as with 14 i did prefer reading Nietzsche and Freüd instead of Aquino and Augustin.

But also had its downside: as i was going to a Technician School focused on IT, I could not find many people aware and conscious of society, or on how society was really affecting them without their notice.

Thats why I choose to not make Bachelor Degree on IT, but in History.

In my First day in History College the teacher asked what each one did for life, and I answered that I was an IT Technician. People looked at me as if I was an alien, and after the attention was gone, the girl at my side whispered me “you entered in the History Class Room”.

Yes, she could not conceive that some one related to technology had interest in History, Sociology, Anthropology, and such sciences.

Nowadays I locked college in order to give more attention to my work, I work fixing Macs and PCs in residences and small business.

My Relation with BIOS mod

I started that when i was 14, at that time, BIOS options were precarious, Award were still not owned by Phoenix, and the differences in their bioses were more clear. Bios Mod was the only way to get some voltages or cpu capacities on some boards, and that was all about this.

Nowadays bios moding has no more such interest, as most features comes already available from factory. Of course fixes for OSX86 are not the case, and that was on where i did pick the tail, besides being not the first or the last one to do that.

My Relations with OSX86

I started on the beginning, trying to create fixes for VIA chipsets on 10.4.4, i saw when osx86project.org was sold, i saw people’s opinions and small forum wars and the creation of many others by people who had disagreements with what was happening.
It is very common in technologic world some peoples making teams, cliques (panelinhas in portuguese) , and small wars, while being inside fences that are inside fences, dividing themselves and being rude to each others.
Here I easily understand the whisper from my history class colleague in that day.

I always tried to keep anonymous among this all, as I saw that sympathy and antipathy were quite above ideology on how people grouped themselves on these boards. The way people treated each other was quite bellow my level of education, and the reasons for that quite bellow my level of ideology.

While people were discussing means, i was watching over results, and that is what concerns me.
I will try to use a tech example that i pretend to elaborate later in other post:

  • ALC885 is the Realtek audio chip that supports DRM. 10.6.3+ Mac OS makes checking of this to guarantee that AppleHDA future plans on DRM and iTunes Store wont be braked.
  • In this moment my Country is trying to create a law that defines DRM as ILEGAL.

I am much more concerned with the second part then how the hindrances is the operational system are being made, because if such law becomes reality, this will not be solved by hacking, but by a simple court case. (Indeed i have interest in both)

As i did disagree on how most people behave, using expressions I would never allow in any respectful conversation that I would participate, I kept myself closed for most time, using some pseudonyms in the beginning, and later nor even this, when launching stuff.

I dislike ranks of any kind, it is something from my personality but also my ideology.
I already refused a job on IBM for instance because I know IBM was responsible for Nazi concentration camps’ technology, with the need of an IBM technician being personally in the place every month. I am a happy poor guy after this denial (It was made with the “why”on it ;-) ).
Seeing the IT ideology that was being fought back recreates itself under the OSX86 Community, seeing this becoming a “scene” full of ranks and self importance, instead of a “community” (what passes the built in idea that everyone is common to each other, having the same respect being a new one or a well knower of anything) kept me – and many other people with good hearth and knowledge – away from touching anything with real pressure.

This only changed when I noted that some technology could create real social modification in the world that surrounds me. As a reader-only of most topics and forums, people saw my appearance from nothing proposing a completely different way of fixing things as a easy-to-use solution something hard to define, and maybe some have defined it wrong: I am glad to see how some people who criticized bios moding for osx86 are now researching this, and this is by no means something i wish to keep to myself, but after years of experience on bios moding i know that it is not a safe way to do things, and i can’t really incentive everyone on doing this on their owns.

Everyone who asked me about it has been pointed to The New Rebels Heaven Forum, and those with more doubts could even have screen-sharing classes trough iChat, besides some having had first a aggressive behavior towards my initiative (before even trying to talk to me).

My initiative had never the objective of taking over other people’s space, the day it became news I almost stopped everything, said to those who were accompanying my researches that they would be always special for me, and i was ready to close my blog.

But then came an idea.

I could use that exposition to increase the range of this project, as many people were crazy enough to offer themselves to have their boards possibly broken just to test this and put this forward. This was for me an incentive, and today, even wishing to, I just can’t stop what I begun. In contrary, i now wish extend it.

“Mais Si! Open Source est bon!! Et plus mieux à l’heure exacte!”

Technology has its history too, and very very – really MUCH – connected to how the world spins then most technologists do think.
30 years ago people were discussing that the guys who constructs the buildings had nowhere to live.
Nowadays the guys who create and develops technologies have no right to modify them.
When Apple started something with open source everybody thought “Wow, Apple is great”.
I saw a vampire. History shows my vision better each day.

I have my own vision on technology that does not fit any licenses nowadays.
I will later make a Post about COPYLEFT and detachment, because i don’t really see that in GNU. Parts of the license (having a license for me is already kind of strange – this is Gates’ way and I can’t follow at all) that were made to ensure that the code would not be used by large corporations to make profit over other people’s ideas became a way to “put your name everywhere before someone does that” for some people like the ones who have a strange need to carve their names in trees.

I never liked those who carves their names into walls.
I am removing the “by cartri” from the bioses splash screens, substituting it for a copyleft symbol, and keeping only the site as some way to people reach support.
I am not against people being known by their invents, but I guess History keeps enough track of that by itself, it is redundant to create a whole facebook linking of who made each line of what, and this can slow down the job of many well intentioned people trying to do free things.

As you see i have 35 packages to make, and a history tracking of what I did to them myself is already hard for me, worse would be where i did research their bases.

I can’t give a “source” as I don’t have one. This is edition of binaries and not codes, besides the ACPI part being code edit and recompilation (and that can be extracted from binaries very easily by anyone so is indeed included on them. The kudos i give to the OSX86 Community and I guess that this is enough for a free initiative, people can research and know who did what when and why or we would finish as the King of Spain Announcement on each release:

“Ladies and gentlemen, His Majesty the King of Spain, of Castile, of León, of Aragon, of the Two Sicilies, of Jerusalem, of Navarre, of Granada, of Toledo, of Valencia, of Galicia, of Majorca, of Seville, of Sardinia, of Córdoba, of Corsica, of Murcia, of Menorca, of Jaén, of Algeciras, of Gibraltar, of the Canary Islands, of the East and West Indies and of the Islands and Mainland of the Ocean Sea; Archduke of Austria; Duke of Burgundy, of Brabant, of Milan, and of Neopatra; Count of Habsburg, of Flanders, of Tyrol, of Roussillon and of Barcelona; Lord of Biscay and of Molina; Sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece; Grand Master of the Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III; Grand Master of the Royal Order of Isabel the Catholic; Grand Master of the Royal and Military Order of St. Hermenegildo ; Grand Master of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand; Grand Master of the Order of Montesa; Grand Master of the Order of Alcántara; Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava; Grand Master of the Order of Santiago; Knight Grand Cross of Justice of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George; Knight Grand Collar of the Order of Prince Henry; Knight of the Order of Saint Januarius; 974th Knight of the Order of the Garter; Juan Carlos I.”

Copyleft is only my opinion, of course I can pick my job and release under this opinion, and other people can pick their and release under their opinion, but i thought really strange that what was being discussed here in Brazil as a future law was explained by english wikipedia as a joke.

Finalizing…

For i would be quiet in my corner, but n ow its already begun. People invested their time in helping me on this way, and i wish to thank everyone who did so. I am a pacifist and ideologist – destroyed promising paths of my life in order to comply with my conceptions. Being wrongly seen by a community (not the scene, the community, made of commons, of equals) that I wish to help on my way touched me once and again, and i don’t wish that could repeat.
Firstly, final users have to understand that this site, this initiative(s) are not the beginning nor the end of osx86 Community, that they are based on a long history, and they should be aware of that many people had to make many discoveries and researches before i did mines, but also developers need to understand that what i do (inserting, correcting and creating fixes into bios) is free and that the freedom of doing that is something to be protected, not menaced: while many discuss small findings, others (“Others Inc.”) are gaining billions over the manipulation of the idea of “property”.
I cant insert myself in the middle of some sort of competition i was never part of and wont be, and I don’t want to be wrongly seen.
My will is to aid, and change the world surrounding me.
I am not asking for agreement, but basically respect.

    Hey Cartri…
I’m from Sicily, Italy… i’m not very good with english, but i still want to spend two phrases.
I want to tell you thanks. Sincerely.
I’m very “touched” by your ideals, very similiar to my. Please, never stop to continue them.
    Thanks again…

PS. Sorry for my bad english, again.

Wow, I’m from Spain and I don’t understand what are you really want to say with the ‘King of Spain’ section. Please explain me, all of the rest is clear and I subscribe it.
    Thank You Catri,
    I love your great job.

It was just a joke about too long credits. Also took the opportunity to be anti-fascism in the photos (remembering that the definition of fascism is the corporatism as Estate, and once I am going against corporatism – what is a institution independent of good or bad components inside it – I did put the photos making the link.)

      • Cartri says:

JC1 in History College was commonly used as a joke about ranks (the 2 i did put in bold principally), about having too many of them, what for a Culturalist Historian is seen as a shortage of real resources.

  • guzfs says:

I didn’t understand though, why all that… i agree with you in all, but, to talk about all that you must have had a motive… you didn’t explain that… and I would like to know more about that (I think it’s because i work with communications, lol). Anyway… Love your work, and I think you should continue = ]

    Hi Cartri

I know you’re aware that your English needs some work. I admire you for trying. I don’t speak any foreign languages. I want to point out one word that you keep using incorrectly. The word is “tough” Tough is a real word that means several things. The word that you want is “thought”. Thought is a mental process. Here’s the definition from Apple’s Dictionary application for “tough”

    tough |t?f|
    adjective
1 (of a substance or object) strong enough to withstand adverse conditions or rough or careless handling : tough backpacks for climbers.
    • (of a person or animal) able to endure hardship or pain; physically robust : even at this ripe old age, he’s still as tough as old boots.
    • able to protect one’s own interests or maintain one’s own opinions without being intimidated by opposition; confident and determined : she’s both sensitive and tough.
    • demonstrating a strict and uncompromising attitude or approach : police have been getting tough with drivers | tough new laws on tobacco advertising.
    • (of a person) strong and prone to violence : tough young teenagers.
    • (of an area) notorious for violence and crime.
    • (of food, esp. meat) difficult to cut or chew.
2 involving considerable difficulty or hardship; requiring great determination or effort : the training has been quite tough | he had a tough time getting into a good college.
    • used to express sympathy with someone in an unpleasant or difficult situation : Poor kid. It’s tough on her.
    • [often as exclam. ] used to express a lack of sympathy with someone : I feel the way I feel, and if you don’t like it, tough.

Thanks, these small things i keep in error.
The language of this site is not english but Broken English, hehe.
For instance, i only learned that which was not “wich” because of firefox corrector, these things that it does not picks i just get lost. The same happens with although and tough i cant really separate em…
but isnt in my todo list right now.
      Thanks for the tips

Yo, I just want to say thanks agian for all your hard work, I greatly appreciate it. I have also had run-ins with people over on other osx86 community forums. There are a lot of people greedy with the tiny amount of so-called power they think they have. There will always be bullies in this world, but you are a gentleman, and I respect your efforts a lot.

  • Raj says:

    Cartri,

Appreciate very much your hard work and passion for the bringing osx to the x86 hardware. In few instances, I have seen the open source and free work becomes very political and they do not entertain new thoughts, ideas or new comers.

I truly appreciate your honest opinion and for following your true passion. Kudos and keep up the good work.

    Cartri

    Very moving and very true.
    There is an old saying
“man is rich in the fewness of his wants”
it means that the less you want the more you have.

I think you work will continue in the right direction, many may disagree but thats always the case. as for change i read something on an indian hackintosh blog
    about the hindu godess Kali
She creates, maintains, and destroys. so everything in the world is in that cycle.

Keep up the excellent work Cartri, moving forward to the goal.

  • Sensei73 says:

Thanks again for your hard work, and don’t be abused by some people. It’s
easy to criticize but those kind of people are not productive. I admire your hard word and don’t be demotivated by a few people, because a majority of us is willing to say thank you to you.
    Cordially, Alex.

  • THe KiNG says:

    Hi,

Since you post on your blog what you think about others comments, I’ll reply here.

    a) Critics about your work:
On little chat we had I told you why I disagree about releasing “prepared” BIOS’es, and the reason is b/c I think people should use the brain GOD gave them, and make their own stuff/job, there is no progress without stimulation, especial on Open Source world…
I have the same opinion about prepared food and so on.

    b) Source…:
You pointed to Rebel Haven forum, but you also know that is not enough..
There is no word about your own modifications, and practically you explain nothing, telling the source is in the BIOS itself is a joke.
You don’t share back, for free, as you earned from forums, etc.
There is no progress in this, and n00bs has no other option then “eating prepared food”.
Open source community was, is and must remain a win win in knowledge.

    c) Donations:
As a educated person you should know that is not “nice” to ask for donations on forums, you can do it on your own blog/website or in private, take example from Rebel Forums or other free places, when a simple thanks is enough for the author…

    d) Credits:
Adding credits is a common practice on open source community (osx86 or not), if you want to be out of this “template” is your choice, but IMHO is wrong.

    e) Osx86 “scene”:
I’m in this “scene” for some time, I’m not happy with it, don’t like what happen sometime in it, disagree with many person from it, agree with some(few) person from it, but I Love the result!
Was always like this, and it will not change now or in the near future, get over this, I did that long time ago…

    f) Companies & Co:
Since I consider myself a simple hackint0sher, I simple do not care about them, I dislike politics, Apple, M$, government(s), and don’t give a penny on what they try to do…
Only thing I do care is knowledge!
I learned long time ago that fighting with them is a lost cause and dosen’t worth the effort, history of the world proved that for so many times then you can count, you will learn that sooner or later…

    Good luck!

    • PgZ says:

I’m afraid I’ll have to agree with THe KiNG on some points.
      a) There is too much brainless hackintoshing, I agree with that. However I don’t think it’s wrong to release easy solutions, certainly if those solutions are just better then the other ones. What scares me is that everyone is able to flash their BIOS, and will expect every other aspect of the hackintosh experience to be as easy as the BIOS flashing.
      - However this is not the responsability of cartri or anyone else planning on releasing new and easier methods for OSX86.

      b) Rebel’s haven forum is dead, it has some useful information on BIOS hacking, but very limited and outdated. I can’t imagine this being your only source and would also love to learn more about how you work on this.

c-f) I think it’s very logical that there’s a possibility to donate, through ads or through paypal. If people want to thank cartri for the work he has done for them, it completely makes sense that they are able to donate.

The OSX86 scene is overcrowded, I have also been following it since Tiger. Saying it will never change is quite wrong, there are alternatives, but those just contain less info, I sure you know these a lot better than I do.

It’s impossible to credit everyone who has directly / indirectly contributed to a project, however crediting the most important ones is not.

Anyway, I’m a big fan of this project, keep up the good work!

Your work has certainly earned my respect. And the respect of many others.

hi, I came from China. I absulotely agree with your idea about copyright and copyleft. I also support Free and Open software. And I also think the world should be free and public. I hope you can continue your work on this. Although I am still a student, I will do my best to help you ;)

You are a compassionate, understanding, open minded, generous, human being with much soul. Thank you for being the individual that you are.

    MUCH RESPECT!

and much thanks for your contributions, I’m about to test out one of these bios’ on my giga boards this weekend. Not because i NEED to have a mod’d bios, but because i CAN, thanks to you. There are 100 ways to get an OSX86 install up an running, I enjoy learning about the different options and possibilities, it interests me greatly, in addition to helping me learn how the different technical aspects/methods/system files relate to each other.

I am sorry, but id like to ask not calling people people by any kind of pejorative ranks in this site.
As so WordPress is being configured to ban any variation of those.
      Please be polite.

Also other users, please keep polite and respect different opinions, which are welcome here.

For now the word “GOD”, besides very pejorative, will remain usable in respect tho those who could not study enough about humanity limitations and the history of it can still use it.

@The King, I figured you wouldn’t get it and lets face it you never will. You’re some little geek that sits in front his/her computer all day beating off. It must be lonely in that little world you live in where everyone has less neuron’s than you. Real lonely. No really…..lonely.

Who is who to say if it is wrong or right to get to solutions in one way or another?. Who is who to tell someone how to spend his time?.
I was personally mistreated by people at some osx86 IRC channels. Horrible.
My only blame was that I was looking to participate in something I was interested in and I was a beginner.

I found your project VERY useful to me all this time, so THANKS CARTRI !!!!.
    Y`r still full of humanity !!! ;)

    Merci.

    André, plusieurs fois grand-père.
