FINALLY! USB3 FULLY WORKING KEXT FOR MAC OS X (XHCI)!
GREAT great news on the same: today, InsanelyMac Member modbin just removed the lock from yesterday’s Lacie driver and we now have a fully working NEC Mac OS X kext for USB3!
- Link For Lacie/Modbin USB3 Forum Thread at InsanelyMac!
- Direct Download to the Patched binary!
- Direct Download to the reconstructed Kext with the patched binary
Please note that this is totally experimental, but first user feedback demonstrates the driver “jailbreak” is working and – besides not showing at the sysprofiler – is giving very higher usb speed to the USB3 port

great news!
It’s must be helpfull for X58′s board development !
Yeah !

I’ll be sure to test this out on my EP45T-USB3P board. Is there any way to be sure its functional without having a USB3 device to test it with?
Here’s hoping we see a new BIOS soon!
Thanks for all your hard work, and don’t let the trolls get you down!

Thank you very much on your incentive.
Things have been kinda crazy lately… It will come another bios, and your board is important to future versions (0.8g+) and usb3. Sorry for not having “animus” enough to make the so waited update. It will come, it has to come: I ask myself everyday about that.
I got the CalDigit USB3 card working with the Modbin modified LaCie Driver
( under my 2DecadeMacUser moniker )

The curious part is that my SATA on the motherboard is not as fast as you would think it should be. Could this be a BIOS issue ? Any suggestions welcome.

Yes I was just looking at that today!
did not know that you were the 2decademacuser, i was almost pming you to confirm there.
Have you tried the original bios against the mac edition? is it faster?
Unfortunately I don’t currently have a machine built w/o Cartri BIOS; maybe one of the members @ insanelymac will have a machine to do that on-motherboard SATA test… I will also have to look @ my BIOS settings and make sure I didn’t make an obvious error.
RemoteWorks asked a good question in the LaCie forum; and I have a partial answer to my SATA Speed issue.

I got speeds in the same range with a VelociRaptor drive connected to the MotherBoard SATA as I got with the Seagate 1.5TB connected via USB3.
So there is something with the Seagates connected to MB SATA in this config that is not giving me full speed potential.
Therefore not the BIOS or the MotherBoard.
Thank you for your continued testing!
sorry for your messages not appearing when they are posted: that is because of anti-spam on messages with links, I will try to find a way to configure this page to let known people post what they want.
And now that I have slept on it… This group of Seagate drives ( ST31500341AS ) had had firmware issues, and Seagate made new firmware releases for them… Maybe part of their solution was to throttle down the SATA II speed to SATA I via the firmware update – too bad for me as I have a couple of them.
I boot with the very same disk! And i also did the firmware upgrade =S
After installing the 10.6.5 on my genuine Mac Pro today, the caldigit drivers no longer worked. I found your blog and tried the hacked lacie kext after removing the caldigit drivers and voila, I’ve got USB 3.0 again and my USB 3 drives mounted and are working again.
Thanks to the hacker
[...] working well, and I also installed the “Jailbroken” USB3 drivers that Cartri has so kindly [...]
Grabbed a seagate GoFlex 1TB, with firewire800 and USB3.0 adaptors. Was wondering if your patch would/could be adapted for the seagate express card adapter. Never edited a Kext myself… not even sure where to start.
It works fine!!!
I’m using one “MyBook WD USB 3.0 1TB” and MacbookProLate2008. One trick for you.
Using “help kext 0.7beta” you can upload the new kext automatically without manually repairing permission (in my case UtilityDisk did not repair permission, I do not know why).
Bye
Marcello
IT WORKS with asrock and nec chipset pci-e controller
NICEE!!!!!
i can enjoy now the super speed!!! finally!
Thanks to ModBin!
Hello Cartri, i install your ” reconstructed Kext with the patched binary” using Kext helper , but when i connect a USB3.0 docking station with my 3.5″ hdd, it always show in “2 HDD” on my Mac, like mounting 2 same HDD at my desktop , i eject one of them, and the rest one still can use, you know how come is that? or i did something wrong ? thanks for your help ..
I tried this with a macbook pro 17″ I7 OSX 10.6.7 wit a Lacie USB3 expresscard and WD Mybook 3TB. The drive appears on the desktop but cannot be opened. After a minute or so I get a “disk removed without being unmounted” error message. This happens whether I try yo open the drive or not. I’m using the latest Lacie driver and used Ktext Helper B7 to do theinsatll. Any ideas ?
Try installing manually the latest version from InsanelyMac thread, use OSX’s Disk utility to repair the permissions for you.
did the permissions repair with apple utility with no effect. Also tried the repair permissions utility in techtool 5 , still no change. I don’t know how to install manually, i’m crap at editing and don’t know which file to edit anyway. i need a \dummies guide\ sadly. anyone know a step-by-step instruction set ?
Doesn’t work with OS X 10.7 Lion GM
The Lacie driver installs fine and Lacie drives show up. After replacing the kext/binary, the drives disappear.
Fix?
Last message date I see is July 8, 2011. Just starting to look for usb 3 drivers myself. Have MBP on Lion and was hoping to find usb 3 drivers for SIIG SuperSpeed 2-port ExpressCard/34. Anything new since July?
ThanX!

– the new kext working fine on top of LaCie v1.07.
Using this next with Startech pci express card on my macbook pro connected to my 1TB core external hdd. Many thanks to “modbin” for the great work
hi everybody!!
sorry for the question, maybe it’s stupid, but does it works with all usb 3.0 express card or only with some kind of them??
thank you very much!!
bye

Be welcome, this driver serves to any NEC XHCI 0.96~0.98 chips. But consider researching the linked thread for an updated version, this one is too old!
Will this driver work with any slim expresscard USB 3.0 cards? Silverstone, Anker, Sunix, Tarjeta, ???
Can someone link me to a fully-functional MacOS (LION) driver for:
Silverstone SST-EC02 USB 3.0 Express Card 34

…please?
I’ve downloaded the kext file, now… How do I install the patched kext?
Thanks!
The mystery of how to use the Kext is still a mystery. I am weak on code, strong on persistence, possessed of a MacBook Pro 3,1 and willing to attempt instruction I can comprehend. I’ve done most of my own IT on Macs since 1986, but have always been too busy with graphic business to fool around with code or adding code to an existing installer. Can I be pointed by some kind gearhead at a Learning Place for a driver that will allow the cheaper Windoze express cards to function with my MacBook Pro3,1 and a MyBook Essential 3TB HD with USB 3.0 connectivity? PLEASE!
The solution here presented is just one of 2. and its TOTALLY outdated. It is not meant to be used on nowadays Systems.
Basically, XHCI was in 0.98 version and these kexts are for NEC XHCI 0.98 chips.
I recommend searching at insanely mac for a actual solution.
Can someone send it to me too?
