About & FAQ

Be welcome to Cartri’s blog.

This site is a personal blog maintained by a young Brazilian History Student (and also I.T. Technician) and everyone who “joined the boat” – be it by using and reporting back projects’ releases, be it by the debate of contemporary I.T. subjects under a social point of view.

I like to call it “Plog” as it was firstly created as a way to organize and track my projects, as I used to forget about most of them.

With time, I.T. users and technicians around the world got the idea of the site, which – as any blog – is in constant debate of subjects. I try to bring to our “frozen machines” world a bit of historical and sociological awareness and bringing to the end users hands the choices and knowledges about what and how they are using – or some times being used by – technology.

This site has no profit objectives, the main objective of it is bringing over the table technical subjects that most Companies likes to let under the carpet. To agree or disagree with the opinions here expressed are equally the objective of many of my posts: It’s not about liking or not something, but being aware of the social changes brought by the technological revolution, and having an opinion – whatever it is – on this matter.

The Projects are the material realization of such toughs and here shared among news, videos, opinions, history… a bit of everything.

Please be welcome to opine in every subject and project posted!

The Blog is temporarily reorganizing the way it was, in order to let clear that it’s intents were NOT RELEASING STUFF WITHOUT AN OBJECTIVE.

Quick F.A.Q. on the “Mac Edition Bios” project

This Project has as intent to show the world that its naturally possible to any normal person to install OSX into their machines, facilitating the process of doing so by emulating computer environments that will let the user do so easier.

Together with these BIOS/Firmwares comes the real subject:

Apple Inc. (AAPL) has been using many unorthodox practices  to over-control OSX and its variants (like iOS) leaving their own public with less choices of hardwares and softwares – what tends to monopoly and, in some countries like mine, conflicts not only with reason and good common sense but also with the law (www.vendacasadaecrime.org.br)

Hey man Nice site and software. I’m going to start an Mac helpdesk for OLd people to learn using à make. Here in THE netherlands. But that Will be free. So can i give THE people your software because its update proof? Its for old people please?!
    Sry for THE english greats

    • Cartri says:

Hey Donkerinternet. Any non-profitable initiative that leads to knowledge like you are saying is by me well seen, I have received the same question (from the same Netherlands, place where I want to be someday – you have given so many good examples to the world trough your History…) about a month ago.
As the objective of Mac Edition Bios is creating awareness about some practices made by corporativism over technology, I always ask to the end user to download from the site, so they will face the information here shared and maybe create an opinion of themselves about what is happening: inf fact the information itself is “there is something happening!”

If you are the same guy who asked me about that before please enter in contact trough e-mail, I cant say no to somebody wishing to teach mac for old people, but id like to find a middle term in which the subjects i bring could be debated into your initiative.

    Greetings!

I have an Acer Aspire One AOA-150 ZG5 that is currently running 10.6.1 with some things still broken. I have the typical problems and have other computers to use on a daily basis. This is just a fun project. Your BIOS project sounds great, but I am new to all this and do not know how to determine which mother board I have. I cannot locate this information on the web for some reason. I can only locate Acer part numbers.

So how do I know which version of your BIOS to download? Please, help!

    Regards,

    Wade

Hi Cartri, Great work, you make it very easy to play with a Hackintosh. I used your 0.8 bios with your bootdisk to install retail Snow 10.6 on my GA-EP45T-USB3P. Then I installed your MacBios modded bootloader. Then I used LaCie USB 3.0 Driver.dmg and RealtekRTL81xx-0_0+67+.pkg to install usb 3.0 and ethernet drivers. I then did the upgrade to 10.6.5 with the link you posted on your site. Everything works great……except the sound. I have tried the sound packages on your website with no luck. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

If you have time can you please tell me how to get the sound working or post a link to the right install package.

Thanks for any help you can give and
Thanks for your work on the Bios mods,

    Gary

  • Gary Bensel says:

    Hi Cartri,
Just wanted to tell you that the latest Voodoohda, from the voodoo home page, did the trick for my sound problem.
    Sounds Great !
    Thanks for the Bios
    next stop donation button! :)

    Gary Bensel

    • Cartri says:

Yes, VoodooHDA is a very nice initiative: opensource, free of “apple only” DRM, and full of options.
It is just not used in this project as default because our objective is to show how a MAC and a PC are the same thing, MACs are only PCs produced by Apple, and as so OSX is a OS that refuses to work on other brands’ machines not for incompatibilities, but by forced whitelist/blacklist technological lockdown (such as physical or virtual SMC IO checkage of “magical words” everytime you pass your mouse over encrypted parts of the system – like for instance your Dock application). As so I wish to achieve a firmware that can make non-technician people be able to note that this is a matter of “jailbreak”, and not machines capabilities as apple propaganda try to pass.

      • Gary Bensel says:

You have proved to me and the world that a Mac IS just a PC with a OS locked to hardware with Apple installed locks in both. Just think if Apple opened its OS to all hardware, there would be a combo mac/windows machine on every desk.

Thanks for all your work, sorry to see it end before you met your goal and sorry to see other people making money on your work.

    • Cartri says:

      Hi!
      Fortunately i don’t live inside anyone’s PC!
      (Just a joke)
In order to remove the new bios, you can use the same flash procedure to flash the last official Gigabyte BIOS from http://www.gigabyte.com under your motherboard’s downloads area.
Just pick the Bios file inside the executable and put it inside a pendrive, boot and enter Q-Flash and flash the bios you got from Gigabyte site.
      I hope I helped.
Following Joca Oeiras’ quote “nada é óbvio”, I will include this instructions on the pdf, thanks for asking.

Hi. I’ve got an EVGA X58 motherboard, and after months of research and testing, it has become apparent that no EVGA X58 motherboard can boot without NullCPUPM unless it has a particular older bios version. As soon as they put in 32nm/6 core cpu support it broke. I just want to know how feasible you think it would be to hack the EVGA bios and replace some or most of the tables in it with ones from a Gigabyte bios.

    Thanks

    - Banini

    • Cartri says:

The bioses are not made by motherboard makers, they are made by BIOS makers, like Award/Phoenix, AMI, Intel/Insyde, each with its own coding, encoding, and specifications. Gigabyte has been using Award 6.00PG 347 for instance…
these are contracts betweens these companies.

      • Banini Jeque says:

So I guess that means no. Who would be the best guy that you know of to work with on trying to figure this out? I’ve been talking to d00d a lot and he’s been pretty helpful, but I figure the more people I talk to that might have ideas the better. I know I should have gotten a Gigabyte board, but I like the way the EVGA one looks…

Any chance you might know any way to get us up and running with the IGPU? It does work, just not for apple hardware, we have no idea how to figure out what would be needed DSDT wise at all. In my case I’m trying to run it on a Lenovo x201t tablet…!

    Hi Cartri,

your work has been fantastic and i cannot recommend more to anyone to run OSX on a PC.
it is however disapointed with some people on earth trying to take credit and or trying to make money from your hard work.

i flashed my BIOS using your version on my EP45-UD3L and it ran beautifully stable with No DSDT with OSX 10.5.8 off iAtkos v7. simply stunning

i have recently tried to upgrade to SL with MultiBeast trying to get up to 10.6.7 with no fun.
i can only get Vodoo 0.2x driver to get my Audio to work.
    the network card runs fine.
graphics however, i can never get it spot on. with Natit the model comes out right GeForce FX 6200 TC but the VRam is mistakenly reported as 1024Mb, only have 256Mb on board.

    CPU is Pentium Dual E6500,
    MainBd Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
    2Gb 800Mhz Ram
    PCI-E GF FX 6200TC 256Mb

i did try to boot in 64bit, with arch=x86_64 -f (don’t know why, but seems bootable at least with no major drama, but problem beneath still exist)
that initially was ok. but gave up on reading my IDE drive when only have the FAKESMC.kext

in 32bit, Flash player version > 10.0.4X.3X doesn’t work at all. causes Safari to hang, and firefox4 not to work. i have to install this old version and use firefox 3.6

VLC doesn’t work, no visual, just audio off any video divx or what not with codecs installed

Preview no pictures display for JPG but have PDF display working

Time Machine some how just brings the Finder to the middle with no background and no timelime on the right, suspecting is the 3D or OPENGL? not sure.

frequent freeze up on screen, no mouse movement leading to hard reset requried.

and for VNC work, looking at another screen on the same network on this machine Gigabayte is smooth as! but looking at this Gigabyte machine from an ASUS machine running fine on 10.6.7 is very sluggish on the ASUS side, also from my Macbook to this Gigabyte machine also the same sluggish VNC.
However, Bonjour seems to be working as the Gigabyte machine picked up the shared printer automatically off the ASUS machine.

any pointers please? must i go back to Leopard?
    Kind Regards
    hek

    • Cartri says:

No, you dont need to go back, you just need a better injection of your GPU, are you using the bios bootloader with graphics enabler to do so?
You problem seems to be graphics card related, turbocache in 6200 is notably buggy in OSX.
But I guess graphics enabler (standard on in the mac edition bios chameleon) should do the job. But you must have no other enabler such as natit or any similar kext, nor a dsdt file. just the bios, the loader and fakesmc…

  • Joe says:

    Cartri–

I saw that you closed the BIOS project. I’m sorry to see that! I never got to try it out, but found the project very intriguing. I am in full agreement with you that it is not right for a company to restrict use of their software to their branded hardware, especially when the only thing that separates their hardware from everyone else’s is their Trusted Platform Module. Power should always go to the consumer to choose.

Good luck in any new endeavors. I check in from time to time just to read your blog and I enjoy it.

    Hi Cartri,

I know you were / are mad at people using your work to make money and claim credit but you had / have a large following wishing you would finish your work. You were so close to finishing, I wish you would finish it.

    Gary Bensel

    • Cartri says:

Thank you Gary, just to complement: i’ve never had anything against people claiming credit over my work, the problem was really with a overall situation beeing ignored up to where it got.
The bios is fine, just adapted F13t to latest code and audio/etc goes very well, the works on videos can now detect if the gpu has audio support (one step to get rid of Graphics Enabler that bloats boot132) and so on, much to do yet. its not dead

      • Gary Bensel says:

That’s great to hear. I’ve been using you 8.0 bios since you last posted it and it works great on my board, EP45T-USB3P, with 10.6.7 with very minor patches. If you ever want a beta tester I would love to help out. I have not been able to boot 10.7 beta yet, like I said if you ever need a beta tester that will keep the files to himself I’m your tester.

  • Jean says:

Hi I was trying to install your 08 version of the ud3p bios. Seems to me like a great idea to change the bios for better integration and thanks to you for all this work!

I only have one problem, i get the bios id error and can’t go on with the bios install. I think it’s because I have a Rev 1.6 version of the board, and so, I can’t install the f9 version of the bios. I am now using the FE from the gigabyte site.

The build is a complete lifehacker replica. Any ideas or options on what I could do to use your bios? I would love to have a cooler cpu AND sleep!

    • Cartri says:

Your copy of the bios is not made for your Board. The M.E.Bios Project is now closed and the files purposly unnavailable. This is due to the same people that redistributes the files against my will (and against the project’s objectives) until today: hosting their sites in a very cheap server and earning money by ads redistributing it in Mr. M. De B. hackintosh sites, which tend to not only not contribute to osx86 projects, but do demotivates em from being public without any consideration to the end public (like making you almost loose your board by crossflashing other board’s bios).
If this project is closed the dutch groups have big big responsibility on that… And they were just oe. For more information on the project closure take your time and read in the blog what happened.

Greetings! Thanks so much for your work! I have a couple of G4-EP45-UD3P that I have used the Carti BIOS 0.8 on and they have been working incredibly well for almost a year. The only issue I have run into so far… I can’t get any of the Spectrasonics audio plugins (that I legally purchased) to activate since my G4-EP45-UD3P Macs have a Serial Number of: SOMESRLNMBR.

How can I add a serial number to my Macs so I can activate my plugins?

I have the .8 Bios for the EP43-UD3L. I had to reinstall OSX, and it installs. When I restart, I get kernel panics. What could be causing this? Also, does anyone know where I can find the guide for the Bios settings? I want to make sure something didn’t accidentally change.

    Hello!
Could it be possible to reupload Alc662 kext project please, because I’m interested in looking at it to get my mic working.

  • Sam says:

I just installed version 0.8 on my GA-EP45-UD3P v1.0. Everything went smoothly.

I booted into Lion using DSDT=cartri, and it booted all the way through, but then the keyboard was non-responsive and although I could move the pointer around, mouse clicking did nothing. I tried other USB ports to no avail.

Then I rebooted, but this time I did not choose the new dsdt at the boot screen. And surprisingly, the keyboard and mouse similarly did not work.

I double checked all the BIOS settings.

What do you think is going on?

    Thanks.

Hi Cartri, I have been checking your site from time to time to read your blog, you always have something interesting to read. I keep hoping you reopen you bios project my board works great except for network and sound. They both work with a patch but voodoo patch prevents updates. If you do ever reopen your bios project you will make a lot of us happy out here. In the meantime do you know of a better way to get sound working on a EP45T-USB3P besides Voodoo?
Thanks for keeping your site up

Hi Gary, I stopped working with new versions on the P4x platform, I actually am studying the differences between 5520 and X58 itself. Although, if I ever mess with the old models again, you will be surely someone to know.
      Thanks for all!

      • Gary Bensel says:

Hi Cartri, I don’t know what the 5520 is but the X58 sounds good. What boards are you working with?

        • Cartri says:

Hi Gary, I am over a GA-EX58-UD5 (Rev1, equals to the EX58-Extreme with different cooling system, different from the X58A series, which is already incorporating an hybrid efi-bios just like I would like to.) Please don’t buy a board just because of me, as you see the project is now internal and undated.
OS X keeps creating new ways to uniquely identify machines towards a closed monopolized software distribution agenda, what makes the work more difficult (originally bought software is already giving problems on hackintoshes, since they are inserting new ways of label/trademark checking combining even the GPU, some people are having to crack games they bought because of the “nohwid” for example, chameleon shall “pong” this, a matter of time) and as so I am researching i2c and pcir operational zones instead of modding right now, once everything changes in 10.7.2 betas about this

          • Cartri says:

Oh, and obs: bad time for buying X58/5520 series chipsets: We will probably see MP6,1 (or some new product name for the workstation mac) in some months, already using Sandy Bridge-E (different from actual sandy bridge) and possibly ATI 7870, the arm checking in the HDCP gpus is growing to new methods. Even if I had the money to buy a new machine now, I’d wait.

            • Gary Bensel says:

Thanks for the update Cartri, I’m not in the market for a new board yet. When this one stops working is when I’ll get a new one. I just like to keep up on any info I can get as far as what might be the best way to go in the future.

      • Gary Bensel says:

Hi Cartri, What was the last version of bios you made for the EP45T-USB3P? I am using your last released version 8. If you ever made one with working sound I was hoping maybe you could email me a copy. I know its all internal now and you moved on to newer boards……just hoping you finished it and might like to share it. Thanks

  • inca says:

    Cartri,

I have been lurking within the various OSx86 forums and communities for a few years and I noticed that usually about once a year I have to come back and relearn everything in order to keep the OSx86 box relatively patched and functional. In combination with some boredom and possible expertise (embedded systems) I thought I’d take a look at the BIOS/EFI firmware issue that’s holding back the interoperable and widespread solution for OSx86.

At first I thought I might repeat your approach, but instead of modifying BIOS payloads perhaps it could be developed from open source (such as OpenBIOS). It seems they tend to lack chip-specific information still, but it is getting closer to a possibility.

As I was looking over that and wishing I could avoid the legacy AWARD-style BIOS in favor of an EFI-based solution, I stumbled upon the iBoot-efi projects which apparently aim to address that goal. However, there is rarely ever a magic silver bullet solution for anything so I imagine the optimal end result for compatibility and reproducibility with require some firmware modifications/patching along with suites of EFI modules to support the platform.

I’d like to correspond with you about the ideal situation and hopefully gain a clearer picture of what’s going on through your more direct development experiences. Hope to hear from you soon, inc

Hi, I have a ep45-ds3l. I’m running Lion currently on my ep45-ds3l and works fine for the most part. I haven’t installed your bios (have to go look for it on other sites since I can’t find it here it seems.) The only problem I can see so far with my system is sleep mode. If I put my computer to sleep for a long period of time (an hour+) the computer will not wake up. I’m not sure if its only because of my graphics card or is it the motherboard. Do you think your bios will help fix this problem? Don’t feel like installing a new bios if there is nothing wrong with this one. Currently I have just disabled sleep mode and will turn off the computer when not in use.

    Thanks

    • jcs says:

      Teach,

      • Cartri says:

Once again clarifying: this is a legacy release of a nowadays closed Beta project. And to cOmmennt with nowadays’s tech argument: it is out-dated and the OS changed the ways it checks some components and even it’s powerstates some ways. The changes were concOmmitant with policies by APPL that led me to conclude that keeping sharing oPenly the results to avoid this system would only help it to bring hackint0shes out, instead of changing it’s market based arguments that keeps us out of Mac OS use even being it’s intusiasts and mainteiners’ informants.

    • Cartri says:

      Hi Jon.
Thanks about the reading, it has been a fight to keep this site online. If it goes down, i should keep the @Cartrinet twitter updates on the technologic society.
As said before the project will not be released here. About the bootloader, you should use latest chameleon svn 2.1 – you can disable it’s Reset fix and use pciroot=1 … The rest is with them.
      Saúde! :-)
